What is half life?

I’m getting interested in the game “Half life.” Has anyone been playing it? I can’t find too much about it online but it looks to be quite the interesting find? I’d be interested if you folks out there is the blogging world could help me?
I am not really into first person shooters or any games besides wow for that matter, but I think it is a really good game. Really good story and the graphics are amazing. Oh, I am talking about half life 2. I never played the first one.
